Today was the first time I met Lucy. It took us forever to actually be able to make the arrangements to meet today, but it was all worth it.
We didn't have much to work with today. Therefore, it was more of getting to know each other. Lucy told me that she really wants to improve her English speaking skills. I learned a lot about her. It's amazing how much you can learn from someone by taking a little time off to talk to them. I'm pretty sure I have seen her around TCU before but we never really talked. She was opened to me and told me why she wanted to learn more English
Lucy has been working at TCU for six years. Even though TCU offers great benefits; she says that she stills wants to earn that GED. I hope that I will be of help to her. She says that even though I am doing this for a class, she really appreciates my help. It’s funny how here I am trying to learn Spanish and she is trying to learn English. I honestly know how difficult it must be. I keep joking around with my friends and family that I am too old to learn a foreign language. Yet, today when I met Lucy I was a bit ashamed of myself. Lucy saw my Spanish book and she even offered to help me out!
Service-learning does not mean just to “help” someone, it means to “serve” someone and learn from that experience. I learned in my Social Work Seminar that Service-Learning is being able see the person or group of people as your equal. I think I will be able to learn a lot from Lucy. I am amazed by her views on life and how optimistic of a person she was. I am really looking forward to learning from her.
