Spring Break

Well, the week before Spring Break...Lucy said she had to go home for some family matters so we didn't meet. I was suppose to meet her yesturday, but she didn't show up. Hopefully, everything is ok and she will be meeting with me tomorrow.
I guess I just wanted to share a brief expereince with everyone. This past week, I was on a Mission Trip in Nicaragua. This wasn't my first time there, but it's always an expereince to remember. I recommend everyone to travel to a third world country and see how other are living. The community that I volunteer at was very poor, but always so happy and cheerful. I heard that a family of ten can survive on two dollars a day! It makes me think of all the things that I take for granted here in the states. These people were very self-sufficient and super friendly. I love being there away from materialistic world. The first time I went to Nicaragua on a Mission Trip was last Spring Break and ever since, it has been a life-changing experience. I love the little children who are so welcoming and full of patience with my basic Spanish. Also, if anybody is ever interested in donating to this community, let me know!!!

And We Begin...

March 4, 2009
Today, we officially began the GED stuff. I always forget to post this up the day of. Anyways, I didn't have the GED books, so I went online and printed out this reading comprehension thing for Lucy. I wanted to see where her reading level was since all the GED subjects were up to the 10th grade level. Her reading was pretty good, but answering the questions were a bit more difficult for her. I asked her about her math skills, and she says she knows the basics. I am a bit worried because I don't where I should really start. Will I be able to make a difference? It's weird because we are only meeting once a week and I am not so sure about myself.
After meeting twice with Lucy, I have learned a lot from her. She's not only a housekeeper, she is also a mother, a wife, and a student trying to earn a GED. She is playing so many roles and is still hanging in there. I still think it's amazing that she has so many goals and aspirations and is working towards them. She's trys really hard to learn teh English Language. I think she's just an amazing person. Funny now that I sit and think about it, I never really talked to the housekeepers at my apartment. I am always in a hurry somewhere. I sure they don't mind talking to the students, but guess I always felt a bit awkward.
Lucy is a very nice lady. I really hope that I can make a difference and be of help in someway.

First Meeting

Wednesday February 25, 2009

Today was the first time I met Lucy. It took us forever to actually be able to make the arrangements to meet today, but it was all worth it.
We didn't have much to work with today. Therefore, it was more of getting to know each other. Lucy told me that she really wants to improve her English speaking skills. I learned a lot about her. It's amazing how much you can learn from someone by taking a little time off to talk to them. I'm pretty sure I have seen her around TCU before but we never really talked. She was opened to me and told me why she wanted to learn more English
Lucy has been working at TCU for six years. Even though TCU offers great benefits; she says that she stills wants to earn that GED. I hope that I will be of help to her. She says that even though I am doing this for a class, she really appreciates my help. It’s funny how here I am trying to learn Spanish and she is trying to learn English. I honestly know how difficult it must be. I keep joking around with my friends and family that I am too old to learn a foreign language. Yet, today when I met Lucy I was a bit ashamed of myself. Lucy saw my Spanish book and she even offered to help me out!
Service-learning does not mean just to “help” someone, it means to “serve” someone and learn from that experience. I learned in my Social Work Seminar that Service-Learning is being able see the person or group of people as your equal. I think I will be able to learn a lot from Lucy. I am amazed by her views on life and how optimistic of a person she was. I am really looking forward to learning from her.
